The Lakota Way: Stories and Lessons for Living
– by Jospeh M. Marshall, III
I was born and raised in South Dakota among the Sioux people. I really came to know this wonderful culture through friendships with people who live on reservations, work to keep their small churches going, and seek to have safety for their children in a way that leads to hope.
Marshall takes stories of the Lakota people and weaves them into themes. In this edition I find the chapter “Fortitude” to be a powerful description of true character. Marshall says that “Fortitude is quiet strength, closely related, obviously, to bravery and perseverance. Along with bravery, generosity, and wisdom, it is considered one of the four greatest virtues.”
