Black and Presbyterian: The Heritage and the Hope
– by Gayraud S. Wilmore
This book is not a history, but it is historical. This book is a good read for white Presbyterian seeking to learn the culture of black Presbyterians and the Presbyterian congregations of which they are a part. Essential to the discussion is the difference between black Presbyterian church who are seeking to emulate white churches and those that are truly being African American Presbyterian churches. The book deals with the dual consciousness of people to be both “black” and “Presbyterian,” and what that means for the church today.
